Of foreign lands…

In putting my new fiction books out today, I couldn’t help but glance at the cookbooks. A colorful spine with the word “morimoto” beckoned me. (Mabye the name called out because I’d rather be out with my husband at our favorite Japanese izakaya drinking Morimoto Soba Ale! I digress…) The book, Morimoto: the new art of Japanese cooking, is my latest checkout. It’s a big book with lots of pretty pictures and, of course, recipes. My prediction is that it will end up as a coffeetable book instead of being tied up in the kitchen. Sometimes cookbooks, as in cooking shows, are just food porn!

In other news, a book I checked out awhile ago is China Road: a journey into the future of a rising power by Rob Gifford. I am slowly reading it every night before bed. Gifford has always delighted me with his commentary on NPR. I am glad to find that his book has the same dry British humor I was used to hearing on the radio. And when you read people you hear all the time, it’s easy to hear them in your head, telling you the story. An audio book in your head! Plus, the book is very timely reading what with China in the news everywhere (Tibet protests, Olympics, etc.).
